Banana Leaves Filipino Cooking and Much More NT Alcuaz 9781412053785 Books Reviews
- I have never given a comment before but I have gotten ALOT on . This book really touched me so much that I hope others might see this and give it a read, the book was writen it looks in about 2003.
It looks like its an ethinic cookbook and it does have some very good advice for beginner cooks, but the book is actually a gift the mom left for her sons, it is her soul. She talks in each chapter about her life as a child during the war in the Philippines and I actually never learned so much about a culture as I did in reading the writers stories. There are some basic Filipino ethnic dishes but again this is more of a story of the life of a girl growing into a woman - born overseas then came to the US with her husband and of the foods she ate as a child and then learned to cook as an adult here in the US.
I hope I did this book justice, I just wish this was placed into an area in where more folks could see it is a diary of sorts of a woman’s life and the foods and love she knew as she grew, this was really excellent reading and I cried with several of the stories and I did like learning about some of her very wise tricks with food prep and storage and did make 1 of the Lumpia dishes (Yum)!
After reading this I also thought, what a BRILLIANT woman, she is left her sons such a treasure, she did not buy them something she instead gave them her heart forever in the pages of a book. I urge you to read it. - I was very excited to order this book, but when it arrived I was very disappointed. Only the first few pages are philippine foods, after that it's 9/10ths full of traditional american foods like baked chicken, spaghetti, calzones, omelettes, oatmeal cookies. Every common cookbook has these basics. Very decieving title. lots of charming stories, but for me, it's all about the recipes & there were absolutely no photos. NOT at all as I had hoped. I lived on Guam for 4 years and had hoped to recreate some of the wonderful foods I had there. The price is way too high to not have hardly any real philippine recipes. I will be returning this one if I can. I've bought two others, Filipino homestyle dishes by Norma Olizon-Chikiamco, its small, but filled with wonderful recipes and beautiful color photos. Also, Complete Thai Cooking, ABSOLUTELY amazing recipes!
- Yay, one of my fav recipe book. Love it! Highly recommend! ðŸ‘
- Despite not ever trying the filipino recipes before, I found the instructions quite user friendly and the resultant dish delicious as it was enjoyed by the family. Mind you, I am Filipino and grew up in the Philippines but never did the cooking, only would bake on occasions from the Betty Crocker cookbooks as we had katulongs to do all the household chores. I truly enjoyed the book and will try more of the recipes.
