“Conklin examines her characters’ lives with generosity and an unflinching eye for the complexities of love and family.... Fans of Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections will find similar pleasures in the intelligence and empathy on display here.” -- USA Today (four stars)

When the renowned poet Fiona Skinner is asked about the inspiration behind her iconic work, The Love Poem, she tells her audience a story about her family and a betrayal that reverberates through time.

It begins in a big yellow house with a funeral, an iron poker, and a brief variation forever known as the Pause a free and feral summer in a middle-class Connecticut town. Caught between the predictable life they once led and an uncertain future that stretches before them, the Skinner siblings—fierce Renee, sensitive Caroline, golden boy Joe and watchful Fiona—emerge from the Pause staunchly loyal and deeply connected.  Two decades later, the siblings find themselves once again confronted with a family crisis that tests the strength of these bonds and forces them to question the life choices they’ve made and ask what, exactly, they will do for love.

A sweeping yet intimate epic about one American family, The Last Romantics is an unforgettable exploration of the ties that bind us together, the responsibilities we embrace and the duties we resent, and how we can lose—and sometimes rescue—the ones we love. A novel that pierces the heart and lingers in the mind, it is also a beautiful meditation on the power of stories—how they navigate us through difficult times, help us understand the past, and point the way toward our future.

  • Layers upon layers of unforgettable moments of a family who is destined to survive. This is Tara Conklin’s novel THE LAST ROMANTICS. Children who raise themselves, who find their places, spread their wings, injure them, fly away, and try to return to the nest to resume their order. But we know that life isn’t so simple and this sweeping tale of a family who is doing their best to hold it together shows us with the tightest of bonds just how to be as one until they slip when truths are withheld.

A language all their own. A code, if you will, that seems will never be broken. It begins after their father dies and their mother takes a break, ‘the pause,’ as they refer to it. A brother who is a shining star in his three sisters' eyes. A sister who has seen too much too young, who takes on a role that robs her of her own childhood. Another sister who is frightened by her shadow withdraws from the life she is meant to live. And, yet another, whose armor is made of words.

THE LAST ROMANTICS connects and inspires. Conklin takes you to a vivid, not always beautiful, world that the Skinners inhabit and shares the lessons that they learn, the moments that are seared forever from their childhood, the love that runs so deep between siblings, the hurt that you hope is reparable, and the knowledge that families are imperfect.
  • I very much enjoyed reading the last romantics which kept me interested on every page (and up too late 2 nights in a row finishing it). The writing was beautiful w/out being pretentious, and I found all of the characters nuanced and human. I cared what happened to each of them.
  • Fiona is a renowned author and while speaking to a group she tells the audience her life beginning when her father dies of a heart attack in his 30’s and her mom goes into a deep depression for 3 years leaving the 3 daughters and 1 son to practically raise themselves. The closeness they shared and then distance. Their brother Joe gettting involves in drugs and the choices they make
  • I hate very few books , but sorry this is one! I felt it was totally disjointed. I could not feel any life in any of the characters. The author knows nothing about the subject she attempting to write about. The Last Romantics , hah, the title is the best part of the book. Will not give anyone advice to read this.
  • It wrapped itself around me like a soft blanket on a breezy afternoon. The characters became my friends.. I couldn't wait to turn the page to read more.. Very well written.. Give me more!!
  • The character development was excellent. This book was well written, not the usual banal prose. Everything about was beautiful.
  • Thumbs up on this multidimensional story, with layer upon layer of complicated relationships and emotion; not just with the Skinner siblings, but their inner relationships with themselves and the roles they play in their family. Each of the 4 siblings is dealing with the lingering consequences of a traumatic childhood, even in adulthood. The story is told in retrospective point of view with a very interesting setting in 2079, which I found a little hard to understand at times, but the true heart of the book is the story within the story. For anyone who loves sweeping family dramas like Commonwealth, The Interestings and The Immortalists, you will love this story too. ⁣

  • It was told from am interesting perspective and held my attention - waiting to find out what was happening in the present and what had happened in the past. It makes for a good book club discussion.
